In February 2006, and quite unexpectedly, I was diagnosed with a serious illness and needed to undergo major abdominal and hepatic surgery.

After the post-operative rehabilitation process, my weight spiraled to a whopping 109 kg by August 2008.

I started training with Augustine in August 2008. After less than 5 months, I have lost 13 kg, have significantly increased muscle tone, reduced my waist measurement by 4 inches and I am feeling those energy levels of yester year returning.

I started training with Fitness Factory in May 2009. My initial weight was 111.7kg and I was only 27 years old. Although I used to play various sports, it didn’t help much in losing weight (my eating habits were atrocious + no gym ever!). When I crossed the 110kg mark, I realized I was in serious trouble and had to do something about it.

That’s when I decided to start working out seriously – guys at Fitness factory were incredibly helpful – they tailored a fitness programme for me, provided nutrition guidance (even tracking what I was eating at every meal), would always work around my busy work schedule and more importantly, didn’t give up on me even when I did! I must confess, I was more than a little nervous when I arrived at the Fitness Factory for my initial consultation. As a complete novice, with no experience of weight-training or gym work I was worried that I would feel out of my depth. After all, it’s not every day that you’re surrounded by award-winning bodybuilders!

With a few marathons and triathlons under my belt as an amateur, I thought I'd reached all my goals of simply finishing endurance races. I came to Moses and the Fitness Factory team just to improve on general fitness but no, that wasn't enough for them. Barely two months into my sessions, I set a personal best in the swim leg of my next race, shaving more than a minute off. A month later, I placed 12th out of 538 runners in the women's open category of my very first 15km race, when I had never broken out of the mid-30s before. I've never felt as athletic and agile playing softball and tennis as I do now. And when I feel like giving up, I just have to think - I went from 100 leg raises each session to 300. If that sounds like an impossible number, no fear - these guys will get you there, and wherever you want to be.

Getting about and around with my daily routine was greatly hindered by both my weight and my arthritic knees. Being overweight also did not help ease the constant pain my knees were giving me. Ever since I trained with Vincent and Joan, results started to show. Coupled with a good diet advice I managed to shed those extra weight I had been trying to lose. I first joined Fitness Factory because I wanted results. Working out by myself for an hour twice a week was doing nothing for me except to keep me fit. Taking supplements for muscle gains and watching my diet did not produce any results either. I wanted to see some muscular development - at least some tone to my muscles. I am the kind of person that needs to be inspired and motivated to work out. I tried personal training before but was not inspired by my trainer and didn’t see results so I stopped training even before my sessions ended.

I decided to give training another shot last year as I was planning to get married and wanted to look my best on my wedding day. I shared with Joan about my goals and told her that I was planning to wear a bare-back wedding gown. With my goals in mind, Joan gave me advice on nutrition and specific exercises to meet my needs. After just a few months of consistent training with Joan and Vincent, I began to see results. I lost weight overall and more significantly; the workouts gave my body more definition and shape. I was slimmer and more toned than I had been before! I was very glad to have trained with Joan and Vincent before my wedding and felt that the hard work paid off when I received many compliments on my wedding day.

Prior to taking up personal training, I was always feeling lethargic and was very prone to falling sick. Personal training not only helped me feel energized, I now feel healthier as well.

My objective, when I began working out with Joan and Augustine, was to improve general muscle tone and to fix a chronic back condition that I had been suffering from. I hoped I would be able to play golf again, something I had not been able to do for the past five years.

I hate exercise of any kind. But increasing weight, diminishing energy and lower back pain made me realise I needed to get my act together if I wanted to continue enjoying doing the things I enjoyed doing.

Call it serendipity. Exactly around that time, I happened upon an article in The Straits Times, featuring Joan, talking about fitness. On an impulse, I emailed her.

Since that email in February 2006, I have been working out twice a week with Joan. Based on the recommendations of a doctor, she has created an exercise regime addressing my lower back problems and focused on strengthening core muscles.

I have discovered that I can commit to doing something I essentially loathe. Through friend’s recommendation and seeing Joan’s fitness corner advice in the Singapore Shape magazine, I was introduced to fitness factory. I have been an athlete my whole life and after starting full-time work, I had let me fitness slip away from me. I had tried True fitness and Fitness First, but felt I wanted to get a higher level of personal training and work toward a goal, like Fitness Competitions.

Upon entering Fitness Factory I was hesitant as I saw few ladies, but surprised by the friendly culture, each trainer knows each client by name. I was impressed with the level of knowledge of the trainers, we focused on fundamentals and every exercise was executed with strict form which really helped to improve my training techniques. Besides training, I went through nutrition consultation; it helped me understand how to balance the input/output of my diet.

Four months after I started training with Fitness Factory, I became pregnant with my first child. As I had already been training, my doctor encouraged me to keep training throughout the whole pregnancy. As an older first time mother, at 37 years of age, I wanted to help myself the most throughout the entire pregnancy. I knew the benefits of exercise during pregnancy but had no idea how good it kept me ‘feeling’. I had no pregnancy symptoms. I had, had a previous disc herniation injury in my back and had no backache during my pregnancy. Because I continued walking 2-4 times per week either outside or on the cross-trainer, I had no ankle or leg swelling and no joint stiffness at all. I gained only 3-4 kg for the entire pregnancy. Lastly, the doctor was amazed by the fact that my blood pressure readings got better with each visit over the whole pregnancy, and I had no risk of being placed on bed rest. I continued weight training until week 38 and cross-trainer work until delivery.

I am thrilled with the results so far. I came into this experience hoping to get toned and healthy and got so much more. I would definitely recommend anyone looking for effective training and improved health to come to Fitness Factory.
